Missing your Required Documents?
Here’s how to find them before your appointment.

Locating your identity-related documents:

  • Call the IRS assistance phone number at 800-829-1040. (Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, your local time — except Alaska and Hawaii which are Pacific time)

  • Navigate here to replace your Social Security card, request a Social Security number, report a stolen Social Security number, or update your personal information.

To obtain a Social Security number, the following must be true:

Are a U.S. Citizen aged 18 or older with a U.S. mailing address,

Are not seeking a name change, and

Hold a driver's license or state-issued identification card from one of the participating states or the District of Columbia.

  • If you're unable to retrieve your IP PIN online, you may call us at 800-908-4490 for specialized assistance, Monday - Friday, 7 a.m. - 7 p.m. your local time (Alaska & Hawaii follow Pacific Time), to have your IP PIN reissued.

  • Contact your bank provider for this information.

How do I locate my previous year’s tax returns?

  • 1. Ask their software provider or tax preparer for a copy.

    2. Order a free tax transcript from the IRS online, by phone (800-908-9946), or by mail using Form 4506-T.

    3. Request a copy of a tax return from the IRS for a fee of $43 by completing and mailing Form 4506. Copies are available for the current tax year and up to seven years prior.

Locating your education-related documents:

  • Your college or career school will provide your 1098-T form electronically or by postal mail if you paid any qualified tuition and related education expenses during the previous calendar year.

  • You can download your 1098-E from your servicer’s website. (You can’t download your 1098-E from StudentAid.gov.)

If you’re not sure who your loan servicer is, you can log in to StudentAid.gov to get your servicer’s contact information. You can also call the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

Locating your income-related documents:

  • Employers are obligated to send the current W-2 to all W-2 employees by January 31, 2024, via mail or electronically. If you haven't received your W-2, please contact your employer directly for a copy. In the event you're unable to reach your employer, you can wait until late May to request a "Wage and Income Transcript" from the IRS.

Another option is using the IRS Form 4852.This is a substitute form that allows you to file your taxes even if you are missing tax documents, such as a W-2 or 1099. You can use the one-page form to claim income from a variety of sources and figure your tax liability, even if the issuer is unable to provide original tax documents. On Form 4852 you can claim not only income but also any state and federal taxes deducted from your payments. Filing Form 4852 is better than requesting an extension because it allows you to avoid the interest charges that come with paying your taxes late.

  • A bank or financial institution may send you a 1099-DIV or 1099-INT. The deadline to receive these forms is January 31st, so if you have not received your forms from each financial institution by mid-February, you may want to reach out to your financial institution to obtain a replacement copy. With these forms, you do not need to file them with the IRS, so you can get the information from online banking if necessary.

  • To access your mortgage information, visit your lender's website. Additionally, details can be found in documents such as your monthly mortgage statements and Closing Disclosure (or HUD-1). By January 31, 2024, your lender is expected to send you a 1098. If you haven't received it by then, reach out to them to obtain the necessary information.
